Claude Pro vs NanoGPT - same model, different price

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is the best AI writer i've used. better than GPT-4o for structured writing, analysis, and nuanced responses. but do you need to pay Anthropic $20/month for it? after using NanoGPT's access to Claude 3.5 Sonnet for 4 months, here's my answer: no, you don't.

the output is identical. same model, same parameters, same quality. NanoGPT just routes your request to the same Anthropic API. the difference is the interface, the price, and what else you get on top.

tl;dr: NanoGPT wins for most users. same Claude 3.5 Sonnet quality at $8-12/month instead of $20, plus 40+ other models. Claude Pro is only worth it if you rely heavily on Claude Projects, Artifacts, or the native mobile app.

key takeaways:

  • same model, same quality: NanoGPT routes to the same Anthropic API, output is identical
  • you save $12-15/month at medium usage and get 40+ additional models on top of Claude
  • Claude Pro wins only if you need Projects, Artifacts, or the polished native experience

pricing - the $12/month difference

planpricemodelsAPI access
Claude Pro$20/monthClaude 3.5, Claude 3 Opus, Haikuyes (limited)
NanoGPT$8/month minClaude 3.5 + 40 othersyes (full)

that's a $12/month difference. $144/year.

what you actually spend on NanoGPT

usage levelmonthly costvs Claude Pro
light (few messages/day)$2-3save $17-18
medium (daily work)$5-8save $12-15
heavy (writing + code)$12-15save $5-8
very heavy (all day)$18-22similar or more

at medium usage you save $12-15/month. at very heavy usage the costs converge. but even then you get 40+ additional models on NanoGPT.

quality - same model, same output

this was my biggest question. does Claude 3.5 Sonnet through NanoGPT produce the same quality as Claude Pro directly?

i ran the same 10 prompts through both platforms:

testClaude ProNanoGPT (Claude 3.5)difference
1000-word articleexcellentexcellentnone
code reviewgoodgoodnone
research summaryexcellentexcellentnone
creative writingvery goodvery goodnone
technical docsgoodgoodnone

the output is identical. same model, same parameters, same quality. NanoGPT routes your request to the same Anthropic API.

the only difference: NanoGPT might have slightly different rate limits or context window handling. in practice i never hit those limits in 4 months of daily use.

context window

featureClaude ProNanoGPT (Claude 3.5)
context window200K tokens200K tokens
file upload sizeup to 10MBvia API

same context window on both platforms. Claude Pro's file upload interface is nicer - drag and drop vs API calls. but if you're using Open WebUI or SillyTavern, the difference is minimal.

response speed

metricClaude ProNanoGPT (Claude 3.5)

speed is essentially identical. both route to the same Anthropic infrastructure.

what Claude Pro has that NanoGPT doesn't

claude projects and artifacts are the main advantages.

this is where the $20 might be worth it for some people.

Claude Projects

Projects let you create persistent workspaces with custom instructions and uploaded documents. it's like having a specialized Claude that knows your context.

example: i had a "Writing" project with my style guide, preferred tone, and sample articles. Claude used all of that as context for every response.

NanoGPT doesn't have this. you'd need to paste context into each conversation. for me, that's a minor inconvenience. for someone who relies heavily on Projects, it's a dealbreaker.

Artifacts

Artifacts are Claude's way of showing code, documents, and visualizations in a separate panel. nice but not essential - NanoGPT shows the same content inline.

do these features matter?

if you use Claude Projects heavily, stay with Claude Pro. the workflow integration is worth $20/month.

if you just chat with Claude and don't need persistent projects, NanoGPT saves you $12+/month for the same model quality.

privacy - NanoGPT wins

NanoGPT wins on privacy. you can pay with Monero and never provide personal info. Claude Pro requires email and credit card.

if you're a journalist, researcher, or anyone handling sensitive info, this matters. see my NanoGPT privacy review for details.

API access

nanoGPT's openAI-compatible format works with more tools.

both offer API access, but the experience differs.

Claude Pro API

  • limited API credits included with Pro plan
  • can buy more at standard Anthropic rates
  • direct Anthropic API access
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet: $3/1M input, $15/1M output

NanoGPT API

  • full API access included
  • pay per use from your credit balance
  • OpenAI-compatible format
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet: same rate (~$3/1M input)

which API is better

featureClaude Pro APINanoGPT API

NanoGPT's OpenAI-compatible format means it works with more tools - Open WebUI, LibreChat, SillyTavern, Cursor, etc. Claude's native API only works with tools that specifically support Anthropic.

who should use which

nanoGPT for most users. claude pro only if you need projects or artifacts.

Claude Pro is better for

  • heavy Claude Projects users
  • people who want the native Claude experience
  • users who need Artifacts for code/document workflows
  • anyone who values the polished mobile app
  • Anthropic enthusiasts who want to support the company directly

NanoGPT is better for

  • budget-conscious users who want Claude 3.5 for less
  • people who want multiple models (not just Claude)
  • privacy-focused users who pay with crypto
  • developers who need OpenAI-compatible API access
  • users who don't need Projects or Artifacts

my verdict

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is still my go-to for writing. but i access it through NanoGPT now instead of paying Anthropic directly.

the $12/month savings adds up. and when Claude isn't the best tool for a job - like when i need GPT-4o for code or Gemini for research - i can switch instantly.

if you're a heavy Projects user, stay with Claude Pro. if you just want the model, NanoGPT is the smarter play.
