ChangeNOW Review 2026: 40+ Swaps Later, Here's the Deal

i've been swapping on ChangeNOW since march 2026. BTC to XMR, ETH to USDT, weird pairs nobody else supports. over 40 swaps, zero lost funds, one KYC surprise that pissed me off.

tl;dr: ChangeNOW is a solid no-KYC swap service with 900+ coins, 0.7-1.5% average fees, and fast processing. i did 40+ swaps over 3 months with zero lost funds, but got hit with a KYC request on an $8K swap. the service works best for swaps under $5K where it requires no verification.

key takeaways:

  • ChangeNOW supports 900+ assets, more than SimpleSwap (600+) or GhostSwap (50)
  • average fees are 0.7-1.5% with the best rates on ETH-to-USDT pairs at 0.7%
  • KYC triggers around $5,000, lower than SimpleSwap's ~$6K threshold
  • processing speed averages 8 minutes for BTC to XMR, faster than SimpleSwap but slower than GhostSwap for privacy
  • IP addresses are logged, so use Tor or VPN for better privacy

here's the raw truth from someone who actually uses this thing weekly instead of writing a review based on one test swap.

what ChangeNOW actually is

short answer: ChangeNOW is a non-custodial crypto swap service operating since 2017 with 900+ supported assets and no account required for swaps under about $5K.

non-custodial swap service. you send coin A, you receive coin B. no account, no email, no selfie with today's newspaper. the company's been around since 2017 - registered in Seychelles. that's 8 years in crypto, which is like 80 years in normal business.

they support 900+ assets. that's massive. if you need some obscure DeFi token or a random L2 asset, ChangeNOW probably has it. SimpleSwap has 600+, GhostSwap has maybe 50. ChangeNOW wins on selection by a mile.

my swap log: the real numbers

short answer: across 40+ ChangeNOW swaps in 2026, BTC to XMR averaged 8 minutes at 1.0-1.3% spread, LTC to XMR averaged 5 minutes at 0.8%, and ETH to USDT averaged 12 minutes at 0.6%.

i tracked everything. here's what actually happened over 3 months:

the good swaps

BTC → XMR - my bread and butter. done this pair probably 15 times. average time: 8 minutes. fastest was 4 minutes on a saturday morning when nobody was using Bitcoin. spread: 1.0-1.3%. reliable every single time.

LTC → XMR - the sleeper combo. 5 minutes average, 0.8% spread. LTC has low network fees and fast confirmations, XMR has low network fees. two cheap coins = cheap swap. if you're optimizing for fees, this is the move.

ETH → USDT - about 12 minutes, 0.6% spread. but here's the catch: if you're getting USDT on Ethereum (ERC-20), the gas fees to move it afterward will eat you alive. consider getting USDT on Tron instead.

BTC → ETH - 10 minutes, 0.7% spread. nothing special. works fine.

DOGE → XMR - 15 minutes, 1.4% spread. higher because DOGE liquidity on swap services isn't great. wouldn't recommend this pair unless you're specifically dumping DOGE.

the KYC surprise

june 2026. i tried swapping $8,000 worth of BTC to XMR. ChangeNOW flagged it mid-swap and asked for KYC. passport, selfie, the whole deal.

i was annoyed but not surprised. every no-KYC exchange has a threshold. ChangeNOW's seems to be around $5,000. anything above that and you're rolling the dice.

the swaps under $5K? never had a single KYC request. 40+ transactions, clean.

the fee situation

short answer: ChangeNOW charges a 0.5% service fee baked into the exchange rate plus a 0.2-1.0% spread, totaling 0.7-1.5% per swap.

ChangeNOW says "no hidden fees." that's... partially true. let me break it down.

there's a 0.5% service fee baked into the exchange rate they show you. so the rate you see is NOT the real spot rate - it's already 0.5% worse. then on top of that, there's a spread of 0.2-1.0% depending on the pair. plus network fees.

real example: june 15, swapped 0.05 BTC to XMR. spot rate was 1 BTC = 352 XMR. ChangeNOW gave me 1 BTC = 347.2 XMR. that's 1.36% total cost. got my XMR in 7 minutes.

is that expensive? kinda. for a no-KYC swap with zero friction and zero questions, it's acceptable. for reference:

exchangetotal cost (typical)
ChangeNOW0.7-1.5%
SimpleSwap0.8-2.0%
GhostSwap1.0-2.5%
Exodus built-in swap2-5%

ChangeNOW is in the middle. not the cheapest, not the most expensive.

fixed rates cost slightly more - around 1-1.5% total. but you know exactly what you're getting. for swaps over $500, i usually go fixed. under $500, floating is fine.

speed: faster than the competition

short answer: ChangeNOW processes swaps faster than competitors, averaging 8 minutes for BTC to XMR and 5 minutes for LTC to XMR, with internal processing under 2 minutes after blockchain confirmation.

this is where ChangeNOW actually shines. their internal processing is fast - usually under 2 minutes after the first blockchain confirmation.

pairaverage timefastestslowest
BTC → XMR8 min4 min22 min
ETH → USDT12 min6 min35 min
LTC → XMR5 min3 min12 min

the slow ones were all during Bitcoin network congestion. ChangeNOW can't control blockchain speed. but their backend consistently processes faster than SimpleSwap or GhostSwap.

out of 40+ swaps: zero failed transactions. one took 45 minutes because BTC was clogged. i asked support about it, they responded in under 2 hours. that's solid.

compared to GhostSwap (2 failed swaps in my testing) and SimpleSwap (1 failure), ChangeNOW is the most reliable of the three.

privacy: what they know about you

short answer: ChangeNOW logs IP addresses and stores wallet addresses but requires no account or email for swaps under $5K, giving it a privacy score of 7 out of 10.

let's be real about what ChangeNOW collects:

  • no account for swaps under ~$5K ✓
  • no email needed ✓
  • IP address - they log it. use Tor or VPN
  • wallet addresses - stored for some period
  • transaction history - kept internally

privacy score: 7/10. better than most centralized exchanges. worse than GhostSwap (9/10) or decentralized options.

the main leak is your IP. if you care, use a VPN at minimum. Tor is better. but if you're just doing casual swaps under $5K, a VPN is probably enough.

what triggers KYC

based on my 40+ swaps and what i've read on Reddit:

  • swaps over $5,000 → likely KYC request
  • using flagged/tainted coins → KYC request
  • multiple large swaps in short time → possible KYC
  • standard swaps under $5K → you're fine

when to use ChangeNOW (and when not to)

short answer: use ChangeNOW when you need obscure coin pairs, fixed rates, or fast processing for swaps under $5K, but avoid it for maximum privacy or amounts over $10K.

use it when:

  • you need an obscure coin pair (900+ assets)
  • you want fixed rates to avoid slippage
  • speed matters (fastest processing of the three)
  • you're swapping under $5K

don't use it when:

  • you're swapping over $10K - use OTC or a DEX
  • you need absolute cheapest rates - SimpleSwap sometimes wins on popular pairs
  • you're paranoid about IP logging - use GhostSwap or atomic swaps

i use ChangeNOW as my secondary exchange. SimpleSwap is my primary for BTC and ETH pairs. ChangeNOW is what i reach for when SimpleSwap doesn't have a coin or when i need speed.

the honest verdict

short answer: ChangeNOW is a reliable 8-year-old service with 900+ coins and fast processing, but its KYC threshold at $5K is lower than SimpleSwap and it logs IP addresses.

ChangeNOW is a solid service. 8 years running, 900+ coins, fast processing, zero lost funds in my experience. the fees are mid-range. the privacy is decent. the KYC threshold is a bit lower than SimpleSwap ($5K vs $6K), which annoys me.

if you're looking for one no-KYC exchange to start with, SimpleSwap is slightly better for most people. but ChangeNOW is the better choice if you need coin variety or speed.
