ChangeNOW Stuck Pending? What To Do
i had a ChangeNOW swap stuck for 45 minutes last week. checked the blockchain, the BTC was sent. ChangeNOW showed "processing" but nothing happened. i panicked for about 10 minutes, then remembered that most "stuck" swaps just need more time. here is what i learned.
how a ChangeNOW swap works
every ChangeNOW swap goes through 3 stages:
-
waiting for deposit -- you send crypto to the address ChangeNOW gives you. this stage ends when your transaction gets 1 confirmation on the blockchain.
-
processing -- ChangeNOW receives your crypto and is exchanging it. this is the stage where most swaps feel "stuck." it usually takes 5-30 minutes.
-
completed -- the swapped crypto is sent to your receiving address.
the "stuck" feeling usually happens during stage 2. ChangeNOW shows "processing" and you are just waiting.
normal wait times
from my 30+ swaps on ChangeNOW:
| Swap Pair | Average Time | Fastest | Slowest |
|---|---|---|---|
| BTC to ETH | 18 min | 8 min | 45 min |
| ETH to USDT | 12 min | 5 min | 25 min |
| XMR to BTC | 22 min | 12 min | 55 min |
| BTC to XMR | 25 min | 15 min | 1h 10min |
| LTC to ETH | 10 min | 4 min | 18 min |
average across all pairs: 17 minutes
if your swap has been processing for less than 30 minutes, it is probably not actually stuck. it is just slow.
when "stuck" is normal
here is the uncomfortable truth: most swaps that feel stuck are not stuck. they are just waiting for network confirmations or for ChangeNOW to process the exchange.
things that make swaps slower:
- Bitcoin network congestion -- if the BTC mempool is full, confirmations take longer. this is not ChangeNOW's fault.
- large amounts -- swaps over $5,000 sometimes take longer because ChangeNOW does extra verification.
- privacy coins -- XMR and ZEC swaps take longer because the blockchain confirmations are different.
- weekends -- i have no data to back this up, but my weekend swaps seem slower.
when to actually worry
swap is probably stuck if:
- it has been over 2 hours with no status change
- the status says "awaiting deposit" but you already sent the crypto
- you see an error message instead of "processing"
- the transaction ID on the blockchain shows confirmations but ChangeNOW still says "processing"
what to do if your swap is stuck
step 1: check the blockchain
go to a blockchain explorer (blockchain.com for BTC, etherscan.io for ETH) and search for your transaction ID. if you see confirmations, the crypto was sent. ChangeNOW just needs to process it.
step 2: wait 30 more minutes
if it has been under 2 hours, just wait. seriously. most "stuck" swaps complete within 30 minutes of me deciding to stop checking.
step 3: check ChangeNOW status page
ChangeNOW has a status page at status.changenow.io. if there are known issues with a specific blockchain, they will post it there.
step 4: contact support
if it has been over 2 hours, contact ChangeNOW support:
- email: support@changenow.io
- include your transaction ID (the one you sent, not the ChangeNOW order ID)
- include the exact amount and pair
- be polite. support is slow but they do fix things.
my experience with ChangeNOW support: response time is 12-48 hours. they resolved my stuck swap in about 24 hours. the crypto arrived about 2 hours after they responded.
step 5: do NOT send another swap
if your first swap is stuck, do not try to send another one with the same funds. you might end up with two swaps and double the problem.
my worst ChangeNOW experience
i had one swap that took 6 hours. BTC to XMR, about $2,000. it went through processing and just sat there. i checked the blockchain -- my BTC was confirmed. ChangeNOW showed "processing" for 6 hours.
i contacted support. they said there was "a temporary issue with the XMR node." the swap completed about 2 hours after they responded. total time: 8 hours.
was it annoying? yes. did i lose money? no. ChangeNOW honored the original rate and my XMR arrived.
ChangeNOW vs SimpleSwap for reliability
| Metric | ChangeNOW | SimpleSwap |
|---|---|---|
| average swap time | 17 min | 14 min |
| swaps over 1 hour | 2 out of 30 | 1 out of 25 |
| longest ever | 6 hours | 10 hours |
| support response | 12-24 hours | 24-48 hours |
ChangeNOW is slightly slower on average but has better support response times. both are reliable. neither is perfect.
the honest verdict
ChangeNOW swaps get stuck sometimes. it happens with every instant exchange. the key is knowing when to wait and when to contact support.
if it has been under 2 hours: wait. if it has been over 2 hours: check the blockchain, then contact support. if you see an error: the swap failed and you will get a refund.
do not panic. do not send angry tweets. just wait and check the blockchain. 99% of the time, your crypto arrives.
