SimpleSwap Limits: Minimum, Maximum, And KYC Triggers
i hit a SimpleSwap limit once and it was annoying. i was trying to swap 0.4 BTC to XMR and suddenly the site wanted my passport. turns out there is a threshold where SimpleSwap switches from "no questions asked" to "who are you." here is everything i learned about their limits.
minimum swap amounts
every pair on SimpleSwap has a minimum amount. if you try to swap less than the minimum, the site shows an error and the swap does not start.
| Pair | Minimum | Approx USD Value |
|---|---|---|
| BTC to XMR | 0.001 BTC | ~$64 |
| ETH to USDT | 0.01 ETH | ~$18 |
| LTC to XMR | 0.5 LTC | ~$50 |
| XMR to BTC | 0.5 XMR | ~$80 |
| USDT to ETH | 100 USDT | ~$100 |
| BTC to ETH | 0.005 BTC | ~$320 |
| DOGE to XMR | 1000 DOGE | ~$80 |
the minimums change based on market prices. when Bitcoin drops, the BTC minimum in USD drops too. check the SimpleSwap website for current minimums before swapping.
important: swapping near the minimum means higher effective fees. the spread eats a bigger percentage of small swaps. aim for at least 5x the minimum.
maximum without KYC
this is the part most people care about. SimpleSwap does not require KYC for swaps under a certain threshold. but that threshold is not clearly advertised.
from my testing:
- under $3,000: no KYC, no questions, swap completes normally
- $3,000 to $6,000: sometimes triggers a KYC request, sometimes does not
- over $6,000: almost always triggers KYC
the exact threshold seems to depend on the pair and possibly the time of day. i swapped $5,500 BTC to XMR without KYC. i swapped $4,200 ETH to USDT and got flagged. there is no hard rule.
what triggers KYC
based on my experience and Reddit reports, here is what can trigger KYC:
- large swap amounts -- anything over ~$5,000 increases the chance
- swapping from flagged addresses -- if the BTC you are sending came from a known exchange or mixer, SimpleSwap might flag it
- multiple swaps in quick succession -- doing 3+ swaps within an hour can trigger a review
- new account behavior -- your first few swaps are lower risk. after that, the threshold might change
- specific pairs -- privacy coin pairs (XMR, ZEC) seem to trigger KYC at lower amounts than BTC to ETH
what happens when KYC is triggered
SimpleSwap sends you an email asking for:
- government-issued ID (passport or driver's license)
- a selfie holding the ID
- sometimes a proof of address
you have 72 hours to submit the documents. if you do not, the swap is cancelled and you get a refund to your sending address.
i have been flagged twice. both times i submitted my passport and it was verified within 24 hours. the swaps then completed normally.
how to stay under the KYC threshold
if you want to avoid KYC on SimpleSwap, here are practical strategies:
- keep swaps under $3,000 -- this seems to be the safe zone
- do not rush multiple swaps -- space them out by at least an hour
- use clean addresses -- if your BTC comes from a known exchange, you are less likely to be flagged
- try other exchanges -- ChangeNOW has a similar threshold (~$5,000). GhostSwap has no KYC at all. Trocador routes to whichever exchange has the lowest KYC risk.
limits comparison
| Exchange | Max Without KYC | KYC Trigger | Refund on KYC |
|---|---|---|---|
| SimpleSwap | ~$3,000-6,000 | ID + Selfie | Auto-refund in 72h |
| ChangeNOW | ~$5,000 | ID + Selfie | Auto-refund in 24h |
| GhostSwap | No limit | None | N/A |
| Trocador | Depends on route | Varies | Depends on route |
GhostSwap is the clear winner if you want to avoid KYC entirely. it has no KYC at any amount. the tradeoff is fewer coins and a newer platform with less track record.
the honest answer
SimpleSwap's limits are reasonable for most people. if you are swapping under $3,000, you will never see a KYC request. if you need to swap larger amounts, either break it into smaller swaps or use GhostSwap.
the KYC process itself is not terrible. it takes 24 hours and then you are verified for life on SimpleSwap. but if privacy is the whole point of using a no-KYC exchange, then the limit is a real constraint.
